What it is
Deep tissue means slower strokes and more sustained pressure than a relaxation massage, aimed at the layers under the surface. Our therapists draw on tui na — a Chinese manual technique built around pressing, kneading and rolling along the muscle rather than gliding over it.
It is usually the choice of people who arrive with something specific in mind: a shoulder that has been tight for weeks, a neck that stiffens by Thursday, a lower back that complains after long drives.
What to expect
The session starts with you naming the areas. Firm is not the same as painful: you should be able to breathe normally throughout. If you are bracing or holding your breath, the pressure is too high — say so, and it gets adjusted.
Some people feel worked-on for a day afterwards, in the way you might after unfamiliar exercise. Drinking water and keeping the area moving usually settles it.
When we would suggest something else
If you want to switch off rather than have something worked on, Swedish relaxation massage is the better booking — deep tissue asks something of you.
Tell us before booking if you bruise easily, take blood thinners, are pregnant, or are recovering from a recent injury or surgery. Depending on what it is, we may suggest a gentler service or ask you to check with your doctor first.
